Winter in Boston can be hard to get through, especially without trees and plants in bloom. But there are seven spectacular indoor gardens and greenhouses in the Massachusetts area where everything is green and full of life where you can get your fix - and they are all heated:
1) Botanic Garden of Smith College: it's a bit of a drive, but with over 12,000 square feet of beautiful greenery, banana and cinnamon trees and a waterfall, it's worth it!
2) Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: the indoor courtyard has a rotating landscape of trees and flowers every few months, and the priceless art is always in season.
3) Lyman Estate Greenhouses: located at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, it is known for its orchids and pink and red winter camellias.
4) Logee's Plants: This one is all the way in Connecticut, but it might be the most spectacular of them all with its maze of six greenhouses and the world-famous "Sensitive Plant" that collapses its leaves as soon as a human touches it.
5) New England Bonsai Gardens: Who knew the largest Bonsai nursery on the East Coast was right here in Bellingham? It has thousands of Bonsai trees in its eight greenhouses and one of the oldest Bonsai trees in the Northeast on site.
6) Roger Williams Park Botanical Center: The largest indoor display garden is right in Providence and with 40-feet ceilings, is home to some of New England's tallest plants and a tropical indoor pond.
7) Tower Hill Botanic Garden: This Boylston treasure features The Orangerie, an 18th-century style greenhouse with 4,000 square feet of beautiful plants enclosed with a glass ceiling. The Limonia, its second indoor greenhouse, is cathedral-shaped, and between the two is the famed Winter Garden, outdoors but still shielded from the elements.
